2016 Lexus CT 200h

Lexus’s CT offers up a unique proposition to buyers looking for a small luxury vehicle. Aside from being one of the few remaining five-door hatchbacks in the segment, it’s exclusively offered with a hybrid powertrain for maximum fuel efficiency.

The CT 200h shares its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain with the Toyota Prius. The 1.8-litre four-cylinder develops 134 total horsepower, boosted along by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack which routs through a continuously variable transmission. The CT offers up several driving modes, including an EV-only mode to minimize consumption on congested routes. While not especially brisk, it returns excellent fuel economy: 5.5 L/100 km city, 5.9 L/100 km highway. Only the Audi A3 e-Tron plug-in hybrid can best it in the fuel economy stakes, though it sells for $7,400 more.

For 2016, changes are minimal – Lexus has tweaked the equipment levels, and now offers a new entry-level F Sport Series 1 package with F Sport Wheels, grille, rear spoiler, power moonroof, and display audio system; the F Sport Series 2 adds sport leather seats, and additional equipment. Also new is a limited-edition F Sport Special Edition which adds gloss black alloy wheels, black tail light surrounds, black mirrors and door handles, plus two-tone upholstery.

Although the CT’s build quality is solid and the materials are nice, it is worth noting that rear legroom, rear headroom, and trunk space are limited. While standard equipment levels are generous as per Lexus norms, and include heated power seats, proximity key with push-button start, and a powerful six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth and USB, it lacks the latest advanced connectivity and active safety features. You won’t find Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, lane-keeping assist, or collision mitigation systems.

Pricing for the CT 200h starts at $31,800, and tops out at $40,800.
